COMMUNITY BACKSTORY
Originally Native American territory inhabited by the Five Civilized Tribes after the trail of tears, the region was named Tallasi, meaning old town, by Chief Tukabahchi. The name later evolved into Tulsa. The early 20th century brought a boom in the oil industry after the Glen Pool was discovered 15 miles south of the city. The boom brought with it people and industry, and for much of the 20th century, Tulsa became nicknamed the oil capital of the world. Tulsa also contained one of the most booming and thriving black communities for the century, what became known as the “Black Wall Street.” The city was also the birthplace of Route 66, which brought many tourists and businesses to the area. Despite hardships in the oil industry, the history and diversity of Tulsa have grown it into the thriving metropolis it is today.

Tulsa contains a variety of both public and private schools. Union Public School, rated number 5 in the state, ranks as one of the safest and most diverse school districts in Oklahoma.
